HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THE RIGHT EBAY CATEGORY?

Posted by ebayprofitmaster on May 31, 2010

It is important to choose the right category to list your items in when selling on eBay, because, as we have seen, many buyers choose to search by eBay category when searching for the items they wish to purchase. It is not always easy to know which the right eBay category is though. But it is important to try and get it right, as you do not want to miss out on potential buyers that cannot find your item.

Another consideration is that eBay do not like you listing items in the wrong category, as they like to maintain accurate categories. Indeed, technically it is against eBay’s rules to list in the wrong category, and may still lead to your listing being removed!

If you take advice from eBay when listing your item you should be able to find a suitable category to list in from eBay’s list of recommended categories. Simply type in a few words that adequately describes the item you are listing and eBay will return a list of categories that it thinks are the most suitable for your item.

EBay will normally return listings that are prefect to list your item in. If you type in exact details of your item (such as brand name and model number), then eBay should suggest categories that are an exact match for your item.

In the unlikely event that it does not work, you could try searching for items that are similar to yours, and then pay close attention to the eBay category that they are all listed in (this information is always displayed near the top of each individual item’s description page). Try different words and phrases for your item to see which ones come back with the most results in the same categories.

An alternative to this is to do a category search yourself. Simply click on the categories tab on any page on eBay.

Be as specific as you can with any item you list (for example put your HP laptop in the ‘Computers’ category, for example – list it in ‘Computers > Laptops > HP’. Now your listing will be seen by all those doing a general search for computers, as well as all those who are only interested in hp laptops. This is because items that are listed in subcategories are always listed in every category above.

There are times when there is More Than One eBay Category that is suitable for your item.

In this case it may be worth paying the extra fee to list your item in both categories, so that you can increase your chances of making the sale, as there will be more people to see the listing. Naturally, it will depend upon the value of the item, whether or not you want to go listing in multiple eBay categories or not!

Once you have chosen where you should list your item, you then need to write your listings title. The title is the most important thing about your listing – and can make the difference between someone checking out the listing and helping you to earn easy money online, or ignoring it and not buying. So in my next post I want to take a look at a few things that you should and should not do with your title!
