SELLING ON EBAY – PART TIME OR FULL TIME?

Posted by ebayprofitmaster on April 21, 2010

It is a dream of many people to be able to make their living selling online so that they can be their own boss. Although for a few people it is possible, many people have been taken in by complex scams promising wealth. With eBay it can be true for lots of people, to a certain degree.

Although you hear many success stories about making a living selling on eBay, being a full time eBay seller is not for everyone. Even if in a few weeks or months of the year you have made a good living, it is not much good if in the rest of the year your earnings have been too low to live on. There is a great comfort in knowing that you have a regular wage coming in to fall back on.

In other words it is very tempting to remain a part time seller until you absolutely know that you can survive just on your eBay earnings before you give up that job. Even then you should take care. Ask yourself these questions before you decide whether to be a full time or part time eBay seller.

How Much Do I Presently Make On eBay?

Work out the number of hours each week that you currently spend doing your eBay chores (the number may surprise you) and then divide the profit you make each week by those hours. This gives you your hourly eBay earnings. If you were to be a full time eBay seller, at that hourly rate, how much would you earn in a week and could you survive on that, or would you in fact earn more than you do now?

Do I Have a Good Job?

You should think about what you would be giving up if you became a full time eBay seller. If you are in a job that pays good money and offers you a good chance of career development, then it’s well worth reconsidering your options. If in a few years you could become someone high powered within your company then you might regret leaving your company (even more so if you leave and have to start all over again at the bottom of the ladder in a another company)

Would I Really Make That Much More Money Than I Currently Do?

Unless you sell lots of small goods, most of the time you will simply be waiting for your listings to end. This is something that you can do just as easily in work as you can at home, and still be making money whilst doing so. This decision really relates to the price or value of your items – for the lower value items it may make better sense to be a full time eBay seller. But for the higher value items, you are very likely to lack the buying power to invest often enough in large enough quantities of items to sell in order to maintain your decent profits.

Is My Home Really A Good Place For Me To Work?

Working at home often sounds great, and the idea of it is very appealing, but it very often fails to live up to what you expect it to be. There are pressures to do things other than work. For example your spouse and children might not like the fact that you there but don’t interact with them much during many hours of the day. The problem with giving in to them is that your business will then start to suffer, and your profits drop. In addition to this you have to be able to avoid the temptation to relax and stop work to do other things you fancy doing even if there isn’t anyone trying to pressure you into them.

Can I Survive If This Does Not Work?

If you did not sell anything, or at least not as much as you had expected, could you manage? Or would you have to go back to any job quick just to get some money coming in? That is the most important of these questions, and is the acid test, if you like.

If you went through them all, and can satisfy them, then you can be a fulltime eBay seller. If the answers were no to some of them then for now at least you should consider remaining a part time eBay seller. This does not have to sound as bad as you might be thinking; you might just be surprised how far you can get being a part time eBay seller.

Next time I want to show you how people get to be real eBay money makers. I want to take a look at the eBay Power Sellers.
